TANZANITE --- The Fairy Tale Stone

   Unlike other gems, Tanzanite does not have the mystical lore that attached to gems by being treasured objects for thousands of years.  It was only discovered in 1967 when brown zoisite was accidentally left in a heat treatment oven where it turned blue.

   Instead it became famous due to advertizing hype such as the stories floating around about accidents, mine closures, and trafficiking by the same terrorists that sold "blood diamonds",

   And because of its irresistably beautiful blue-purple color.  The color led someone to declare it an alternative birthstone for December after blue topaz replaced blue zircon which replaced turquoise.
